All about Eve
The film uses a flashback device, narrated at different times by three different characters, to tell the tangled story of young actress Eve Harrington and her rise to success (culminating in her acceptance of the Sarah Siddons award for distinguished acting). Eve enters a small group of theatrical people - a playwright and his wife, a producer and a star. She is befriended by Margo, the star (an older woman) and is then taken on as her secretary. It soon becomes clear, however, that Eve is prepared to act unscrupulously in order to achieve success. This includes the fabrication of her own `tragic past'. Eve tries to break up Margo's relationship with the producer and blackmails her way into a leading part. She then goes to work on the married playwright and almost succeeds with him. It is at this point that a drama critic, who has at one stage helped Eve in her career, threatens to expose the truth about her far from tragic past and claims that she now "belongs to him". The film ends with a twist. It seems to suggest that Eve is not the only unscrupulous individual to have attempted this particular path to success.
