Synopsis

The teenage Ruth has never been able to smile since she was a young girl. Pamela, her mother, notices one morning that she is laughing and learns from the girl that she overheard a man singing outside the house, something which amused her. Pamela decides to invite the man in if this will help Ruth, but he turns out to be a tramp called Tim. Despite this he is invited to stay and quickly strikes up a friendship with Ruth whose personality begins to improve. The tramp also teaches her about being charitable to others. Tim eventually persuades Ruth to talk about her childhood and by doing so she remembers the traumatic experiences she had endured with her nurse, the result of which was her inabilty to smile. However, now that she has remembered this she lapses into a coma. When recovered she has amnesia and cannot remember Tim who she now finds frightening. Tim is persuaded to leave by Ruth's family for the girl's benefit and he resumes his life on the road.
