When Mrs. McGinty's lodger is found holding the rope with which she was strangled he is tried for murder. Miss Marple is the only member of the jury who does not believe him guilty. A re-trial is ordered and she sets out to prove his innocence aided by her long suffering friend, Mr. Stringer. Two clues found in the cottage lead to the local repertory company. Posing as an actress, she is taken on for the sake of her money. There are two more murders within the company before Miss Marple baits the murderer into the open, saving herself from death by her skill with a revolver.
