Synopsis

Period drama of three American ex-soldiers, Eddie, George and Lloyd, in post-1918 New York and how their attempts at legal employment fail and how they fall into bootleg racketeering and gangsterism. It culminates in enmity between the former friends when Lloyd leaves the illegal world to work for the District Attorney's Office which is investigating the activities of George, who threatens Lloyd. Eddie, having lost money in the 1929 stock market crash and now a taxi driver kills George when he cannot sway the latter from threatening Lloyd, and he in turn is shot by George's men.
