England 1648. A story of the Civil War in England involving the capture of Charles I and the adventures of a family of Royalists in hiding from the Ironsides. The Royalists, led by Edward Beverly, whose exploits earn him the title of 'The Scarlet Blade', and aided by Clare Judd, daughter of the Ironside colonel in possession of Beverly Manor, organise the escape of many of their side. Edward and Clare fall in love but Sylvester, who is Judd's aide and is in love with Clare, threatens to betray their cause. Edward is captured but eventually manages to escape with Clare.
