The final instalment in the `Apu trilogy', adapted from Bibhutibhushan Banerjee's 1929 novel. Continues the story of the now adult Apu who is trying to make a living as a writer in the city of Calcutta. Through an unexpected set of circumstances, he stumbles into marriage with a beautiful young woman called Aparna, with whom he soon falls deeply in love. But Apu's idyllic happiness is shattered by tragedy and, consumed by grief, he takes flight from the city and his responsibilities.
