Synopsis

One of a series of programmes that looks towards the year 2000. As the Cold War fades into history, considers whether Japan will be peacefully integrated into a new world order, or if economic, perhaps military confrontation, between East and West become inevitable. Karel van Wolferen, author of "The Enigma of Japanese Power" argues that Japan is rudderless and without responsible political leadership. In his view, the absence of democratic institutions together with the power of Japanese bureaucracy and its cartelised corporations spell great danger to the rest of the world. He discusses his fears with playwright Masakazu Yamazaki, philosopher Akira Asaka and Clive James.
