- Fin De Siecle Islam: Challenge to the West Original
Professor Ali Mazrui of the State University of New York argues that in the century to come, Islam will replace Communism and lead the impoverished nations of the world against the cultural and economic domination of the West. He suggests that Islamic fundamentalism has already demonstrated its capacity to resist Western styles of thought and politics and quotes the sheer size of the world's Islamic population - more than one billion - as an important factor. His views are countered by Professor Fred Halliday of the London School of Economics who argues for a process of secularisation and democratisation as the only salvation for the Islamic world. Jordanian novelist, Fadia Faqir and Egyptian playwright, Karim Alrawi explore the possibilities of a third way, an Islam which returns to its gentler roots and finds its own democratic structures whilst successfully keeping the decadent influences of the West at bay.
