La VIE DE MARIANNE

Set in the 18th century. Orpaned sixteen year old Marianne comes to Paris, believing she is of noble descent and so is proud and does not wish to mingle with those of lower class. She is very beautiful and is taken in by an older an who finds her a home at a linen merchant's. However, he presses his attentions on her and horrified at his suggestions she become his misstress,m she takes refuge in a convent. Valville has also fallen in love with her, as have others and she receives many offers of marriage, complicating her life.
