A Russian unit, sent to the remote province, is ambushed and two survivors taken hostage; a town elder plans to exchange them for his son's freedom. As they wait, the hostages form a bond with each other and with the villagers holding them captive. Meanwhile, the Russian military leader in the region stalls negotiations.
