Synopsis

Documentary looking into the development of bacteriophages at the Institute of Bacteriophage in Tblisi, Georgia, and their extensive and successful use in the Soviet Union. Looks at how they are developed from viruses found in sewage and which attack particular bacteria, many of which are now developing new strains which are resistant to anti-biotics used in the West. Looks at how phages have been used since the 1930s in the USSR but how knowledge in the medical world elsewhere in the world is practically non-existent. Considers how this branch of medicine could be the answer to the increasing concerns about strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria and problems with side-effects from chemically-created antibiotics.
