Costume drama set in England in the late 18th century. Richard Lovewell, clerk to landowner Mr Sterling, secretly weds Sterling's youngest daughter Fanny. Unfortunately, matters are made complicated by the fact that both Lord Ogleby and his son Sir John are also interested in taking Fanny's hand in marriage.
