Quills
Following the French Revolution, the notorious Marquis de Sade finds himself imprisoned in the Charenton Asylum for the Insane, having narrowly escaped execution. The Marquis spends much of his time writing, smuggling out his work with help from a young laundress, Madeleine, who is fascinated by him. When the Marquis' book is published its notoriety brings it to the attention of Napoleon, who sends a torturer, Royer-Collard, to Charenton to discipline the Marquis. However, Royer-Collard meets opposition in the shape of Abbe Coulmier, the young priest who oversees the running of the asylum. The more the Marquis offends, the greater the number of privileges taken away from him; however, he is too resourceful to be stopped from carrying out his work quite so easily.
