Prince Amerigo, an impoverished Italian aristocrat, is to marry Maggie, daughter of Adam Verver, a rich American art collector. The Prince has a last rendezvous with his equally impecunious lover, Charlotte. Searching for a wedding present for Maggie, they find a golden bowl, but reject it as flawed. Charlotte later marries Adam but, bored by their new lives of luxury, the lovers resume their relationship - until Maggie discovers their affair.
