Crime drama. In an updated version of the 1971 film by Gordon Parks, John Shaft investigates the beating of a young black man outside a bar in New York City. He suspects that the culprit is Walter Wade Jr, the son of a wealthy real estate developer. Although the attack was witnessed by the bartender, Diane, Wade still manages to evade prison. Two years later Shaft is working in the narcotics division of the police department when he comes into contact with Peoples Hernandez, a self-styled drug lord. When Wade makes a deal with Hernandez to kill Diane, Shaft makes it his business to get Wade by any means possible.
