Synopsis

Africa is an enigma. It was the original Garden of Eden, the birthplace of humanity. Yet today, it is the poorest part of the planet: the third world's third world. Why? In the second part of Africa Unmasked writers in exile, Aminatta Forna and Peter Godwin, from black and white African traditions respectively, each continue their journey into the continent of their childhood. Together they try to unravel its turbulent history, debating and voicing different viewpoints about the tragedy that has engulfed the continent. Does the rot lie in the colonial past or was the impact of the cold war, fought out across Africa, the final nail in the coffin? Peter Godwin is a Zimbabwean who has been banned from working in his own country. Aminatta Forna fled Sierra Leone as a child when her father, a government minister, was arrested and executed. They travel to west and south Africa and then together to Ethiopia, the one African country which, for the most part, has escaped colonial rule to find the answers to some of these questions.
