Synopsis

Relates the story of the discovery in the Liaoning region of China of a new fossil which seemed to prove the controversial palaeontological theory that birds evolved from dinosaurs. A discovery which was given special mention in an article in the National Geographic Magazine in November 1999. Within months, new finds in China showed that the Archaeoraptor was an extremely clever fake. The head and upper body of a hitherto unidentified bird had been glued onto the tail of a previously unknown dinosaur. Contributors include: Pete Larson and Florence McGovern (fossil dealers); Lewis Simons (journalist); Bill Allen (Editor, National Geographic Magazine); Dr Philip Currie (Royal Tyrell Museum, Canada); Prof Larry Martin (University of Kansas); Prof Tim Rowe (University of Texas); Dr Xu Xing (Institute of Palaeontology, Beijing) and Dr Zhonge Zhou (Institute of Vertebrate Palaeontology, Beijing).
