Synopsis

This summer testosterone gel will be licensed for use for the first time in the UK. In America it's the fastest growing smart drug with users claiming it makes you richer, sexier and more youthful. From 65-year-old Californian Larry Roberts, one of the inventors of the internet, to 55-year-old communications engineer Jeff from Canvey Island, men describe how testosterone enhances drive and performance in the boardroom and the bedroom. But testosterone isn't just for men. For women, it's a proven cure for a failing libido; as Dutch psychologist Aadriaan Tuiten demonstrates, testosterone is an effective female aphrodisiac. And women users, including a female MP, claim it also increases confidence and assertiveness. But as doctors warn, there are serious long-term health risks: for men these include prostate cancer and heart attack. For women testosterone side effects include acne and enlargement of the clitoris. So will the British be the next nation to succumb to testosterone's charms or the first to reject this tempting but dangerous life-enhancer? (C4 Press)
