Julian Rosefeldt on American Night

In his five screen installation American Night, German artist Julian Rosefeldt explores the Western as a film genre and transforms it into a political commentary about American foreign policy. Julian Rosefeldt uses stereotypes and iconography of western films - the lonely cowboy, a western village in the middle of the desert, cowboys around a campfire, the saloon, a lone woman waiting - and juxtaposes them with modern battle imagery to create a critical view of the American military intervention in the Middle East.
