Sarah Smith on Planes, Trains and Automobiles

After explaining some of the challenges of directing her animated feature debut, Arthur Christmas, Sarah Smith introduces a film that had a major impact on her work – John Hughes’ Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987). Smith praises the ‘deceptively simple’ plot, the hectic action sequences and the comic chemistry of the film’s double act.

Sarah Smith was speaking at a screening of Planes, Trains and Automobiles shown courtesy of BFI Screen Epiphanies in partnership with American Express®.
