The film I have chosen to talk about is If These Walls Could Talk 2.

Fran

It's not that we don't want you in the child's life.

Kal

But it's really... it's mainly that we just don't want you in the child's life.

Heather Peace

It's set in a house, but always in that same house, it's the three separate stories all the time of separate couples.

Abby Hedley

Where is that damn scoop? You always put it in a different place.

Edith Tree

It's in the same place every time.

Abby Hedley

Where the hell is it?

Edith Tree

I'll get it.

Abby Hedley

Oh.

Edith Tree

You stupid, bull-headed old woman.

Heather Peace

Two friends who really are in love with each other. It's Vanessa Redgrave. What more can you say. And it's their kind of up-tight relationship that is before a time when it was free to be open and out and gay.

Nurse

Are you any relation of hers, ma'am?

Edith Tree

Well, no, I'm a friend. I'm a very good friend.

Nurse

Does she have any family?

Edith Tree

Please would you tell me if something is wrong.

Nurse

I'm so sorry. Miss Hedley passed away.

One of the partners dies, and it's her having to give up the house. So it's this terrible situation. Nobody knew that they were together and realizing how big a deal it was for that character that she had passed away. Yeah, really sad.

Maggie Hedley

Oh, so you've known each other a long time.

Edith Tree

Yes.

Maggie Hedley

It must be so very sad for you to lose such a good friend.

Edith Tree

Mm, it is. It is.

Maggie Hedley

I think that you should have something of hers to remember her by. I would really like it if you would pick one of these birds to have as a keepsake.

The second one is a biker couple.

Linda

Hold on tighter. This isn't about sex. It's about not falling off.

Heather Peace

One of the girls does the binding and all of that and sort of has to play the kind of butch as it were. But yeah, I do have to say it's the third section that kind of appeals to me the most, just because I feel like it's the truest love story.

And it's Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres going through IVF, which back in 2000, when it was released, was like really quite forward thinking. It's also very funny.

Kal

I don't think she meant immediately, immediately. You could have waited until we got home.

Fran

Shh, I know what I'm doing.

It's the first time I remember certainly seeing two women make love on screen as opposed to it being... it was just real. It was a long-term couple, and you were like, "Oh, that's the way, that's the way it is." And so, yeah, it's hard to think it's 14 years old now.

Fran

Oh, the skydiver.

Kal

No, no, no. We nixed the skydiver. I don't want my kid to have a death wish.

Fran

I like that risk-taking quality. I think maybe we should think about him some more.

Kal

Fran, what are you going? I'm not going to go through this again, okay?

Fran

I just want to be sure.

[End of clip]

Heather Peace

Do you know what? After having done this interview, I'm going to go and watch it again, because it's been a lot of years since I've seen it. But it is one of those films you can watch again and again. And let's face it, who wouldn't want to see Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Stone?
