After much thought and agonising, here’s my list. I’m thrilled to include a modern epic in Maqbool, India’s adaptation of Macbeth, a genuine tragedy and among the best directed and acted films you could hope to see. All the other films are from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. I’m happy to find a place in my ten for William Wyler’s The Best Years of Our Lives, a film I keep going back to, and the poignant operatic melodrama of Visconti’s Rocco and His Brothers. The first film I put down on my list was, as always, Satyajit Ray’s Charulata. Give me these ten and I may not want to return from my desert island.
