An impossible task of course, citing a definitive ten when one’s library - of DVDs or of cinema books – number hundreds of examples of great cinema. Though a useful exercise, such lists tend to favour the dominant mode of cinema, the fiction feature film. Cinema is richer then that. If one is asked “What’s your favourite writing?” the list would include novels and essays and short stories and journalism and poetry and comic-book writing. Similarly with cinema.
