The more good films you are encouraged to see, the more you realise how important cinema is as a language. There are very many great films, and a list such as this only emphasises all the wonderful works that had to be left out. On another day the list might have been slightly different, but it would still contain the films that I love very much that affected me personally. There are certain films that I no longer need to mention here as they have topped ‘all-time’ lists many times, but there are certain contemporary filmmakers whose remarkable works I wish I could have included – among them Chantal Akerman, Pedro Costa, Miklós Jancsó, David Lynch, Bela Tarr and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
