Creating this list employed the usual mixture of capricious personal tastes, critical and historical traditions, arbitrary and frustrating selections, joyful memories and new deceptions, partial but grounded criteria, and thoughtful and adventurous reasoning. Its purpose is not to establish a catalogue of masterpieces or a collection to watch on a desert island, but just what I think represents the evolution of film as an artistic expression in the last century. To explain why I chose these ten titles and left out others that I also love would demand much more space that is reasonable in this collective poll. I promise to reconsider it, if I participate again in 2022.
