In 2012 the chances for the formation of a consensus-based canon of ten have become diminished: this is an era of greater visibility for lesser-known or once marginal works, due to the growth in cinephilia spurred on by DVD, internet conversation and – make no mistake – the surge in repertory projection. With regard to my choices, I limited myself to one entry per director. I might just as well have made a list comprised solely of films by any one of these directors: Ozu, Bresson, Feuillade, Hitchcock, Welles, Sternberg, Rossellini, Pialat, Dreyer, Ophuls, Garrel, Hawks, Lynch, Mizoguchi, Straub, Rohmer, Chaplin or Guitry.
